Installation

Floor insulation

The Installation Process

Standard installation of a Thermotech under floor heating system starts with laying of insulation, such as Celotex. Please note that the cost of the insulation is not included in the quotation because this will already be included in your building costs. However, the cost of laying the insulation is included and this should be deducted from your building costs.
Alternatively, we now also offer a Self Preparation Allowance on all our under floor heating quotes for those who wish to carry out the above work themselves.

Next the underfloor heating loops are installed and secured. Each heating loop is returned to an accessible manifold with no intervening joints and each underfloor heating zone is connected to actuator heads for thermostatic control. In addition we install the blending valve, circulating pump and associated pipework.

Testing & Operating Your Underfloor Heating

Underfloor Heating Pipe

Finally a high-pressure test is carried out on the underfloor heating loops and a certificate is issued which the Thermotech engineer and the client’s on-site representative sign. The floor screed should be laid over the underfloor heating loops as soon as possible to prevent damage to the heating loops.

If you have opted for Thermotech flowing floor screed then this will be included in the installation plan.

A Bit About

Thermotech Floor Screed

With Thermotech Liquid Screed for underfloor heating, the underfloor heating may be used after the first seven days to assist in the drying of the screed, providing the guidelines are followed. Thermotech will issue these guidelines on request after an underfloor heating screed has been supplied, as they are subject to the material used and cannot be given as general advice.

Thermotech liquid screed for underfloor heating is ideal for underfloor heating systems and will enhance the response time of any underfloor heating system. The liquid screed is pumped onto the floor as a liquid and as such completely surrounds the underfloor heating loops. Conventional screed is a semi-dry mix and tends to leave air pockets around the underfloor heating pipes thus reducing the surface contact between the screed and the heating pipes. As trapped air makes a good insulator this is the last thing you want around the heating loops.

Also because liquid pumped screed has virtually no air in the mix it can be laid at a reduced depth, for an underfloor heating system that uses 15mm or 16mm pipe the recommended screed depth would be 50mm, yet retain the same strength as a conventional screed. This reduced depth means that there is less screed between the underfloor heating loops and your feet. The combination of the above factors make for a quicker warm up and better temperature control.

Thermotech flowing floor screeds for underfloor heating are available to customers that have purchased other underfloor heating systems but want to make use of the improved technology in liquid underfloor heating screed.

All that remains is for your electrician to install and connect the supplied thermostatic digital room programmers and underfloor heating control centre, and your plumber to connect the underfloor heating manifolds to your heat generator in accordance with the simple instructions that will be provided.

Using the same provider for your underfloor heating and screed not only overcomes the planning and co-ordination issues that can arise between different companies, but it can also eliminate other difficulties and delays.

Frequently Asked Questions

Just about any form of heat generator can be utilised, including Electric, Gas, Oil, Solar and Geothermal.

With the exception of the heating loops, any self-respecting heating engineer would be able to repair it with readily available components. Remember we use only UK specification pipe and components that are available at all good plumbers’ merchants. The loops themselves would only require attention if damaged, and once the screed is down this becomes highly unlikely.

We design each system to provide optimum performance and efficiency. Why would we then want to degrade this by offering lower priced components, or leaving out some controls?

Simply because we care. We want you to have the best system that money can buy. As installation by a third party would be beyond our control, we could not be sure that the system would perform at an optimum level.

Just about any floor covering can be applied on top of UFH, including
Carpet (ideally with an underlay having a combined TOG value less than 1.5)
Ceramic and Slate tiles
Vinyl
Wood
Thinner floorings will generally have a low thermal inertia, and allow a faster response time by the underfloor heating loops to changes in temperature required by, people entering or leaving rooms or to sudden changes in habitation pattens within a household such as someone visiting or coming to stay for a day or two.
These changes do not normally occur, or have already been considered at the design stage, in industrial and commercial premises and in these cases a covering with a higher thermal inertia can be considered.

Typically the average project takes 3-4 days to install and ready for the screed
